Is EV right for you?

There’s a handful of key factors that you can review to determine if your household is a good fit for today’s electric vehicles (EV). Have a look at the following list of things to consider before purchasing an EV.

Is your daily commute over 100 miles round trip?

Most of today’s electric vehicles have a driving range-per-charge over 100 miles, which is far more than most daily commutes. The average commuter in the U.S. spends around $2000 annually on gas (Source: EIA 2016), depending on your utility rate, you could save 50% to 75% on your fuel bill by going EV – and that doesn’t include the reduced maintenance costs (no oil changes) and the time you’ll save by not having to go to the gas station. If your daily commute is under 100 miles round trip, you might be a good candidate for an electric vehicle.

Do you frequently take trips that are over 130 miles one way?

Long road trips can present challenges for today’s electric vehicles. Charging infrastructure and technology is continually improving, but planning is still required for long trips. If you live in a household with multiple cars, an EV can be a great choice for the daily commuter car. Also note, there are some high-end EVs that can get over 300 miles on a single charge, which is about as long as most people would drive in a single trip anyhow! Note, this is also comparable with the distance some cars can travel on a tank of gas.

Does your household have more than one car?

If you live in a household with more than one car, EV likely represents a big opportunity for your family to save a lot of money, while improving the quality of our environment. Use an EV for commuting and use the other vehicle for long distance drives… it’s just that easy! If your household has more than one car, you might be a candidate for an electric vehicle.

Do you have off-street parking at your home?

Plugin electric vehicles require charging. The most ideal scenario is to have a Level 2 240V charger installed in your garage or driveway. Charging can also be done with a normal 120V outlet, like the standard outlets in your home. If you have off-street parking, you might be a good candidate for an electric vehicle.

EV is probably not right for you at this time if…

  • You commute 300+ miles per day
  • If you do not have off-street parking, it may be difficult to charge your EV at home.
  • If you regularly take road trips over 130 miles EV might charging may not be convenient.

Note, many EV have ranges from 150 to 330 miles/charge, which is a similar range to many gas-fueled cars.
